How it works

When interest is added to the deposit (compounded), the maturity amount is:

M = P × (1 + r ÷ (100 × n))n × t

When interest is paid only at maturity, without compounding (simple interest):

M = P × (1 + r ÷ 100 × t)

  • M = maturity amount
  • P = deposit amount
  • r = interest rate, % per year
  • n = compounding periods per year (12 monthly, 4 quarterly, 2 half-yearly, 1 yearly)
  • t = tenure in years

Converting months and days to years

Months are divided by 12 and days by 365. For example, 18 months = 1.5 years and 400 days = 400 ÷ 365 = 1.0959 years. If the tenure isn't a whole number of compounding periods, this calculator uses the same formula with the fractional exponent. Your bank may calculate the leftover days differently, which can change the result slightly.

Worked example

You deposit ₹1,00,000 for 1 year at7%, compounded quarterly (n = 4).

  1. Rate per quarter = 7 ÷ (100 × 4) = 0.0175
  2. Number of quarters = 4 × 1 = 4
  3. (1 + 0.0175)4 ≈ 1.071859
  4. M = ₹1,00,000 × 1.071859 = ₹1,07,185.90
  5. Interest earned = ₹1,07,185.90 − ₹1,00,000 = ₹7,185.90

Frequently asked questions

What is a fixed deposit (FD)?

A fixed deposit is money you place with a bank or other institution for a fixed period at an agreed interest rate. At the end of the period (maturity) you get back the deposit plus the interest earned.

How is the FD maturity amount calculated?

For a deposit where interest is added to the balance, maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ (100 × n))^(n × t), where n is how many times a year interest is compounded and t is the tenure in years. For interest paid at maturity without compounding, maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ 100 × t).

Which compounding frequency should I choose?

Choose the one in your deposit terms. Quarterly is selected by default, but banks and deposit types differ. If you are unsure, check your FD receipt or ask your bank.

How are days converted when I enter the tenure in days?

Days are divided by 365 to get years. For example, 400 days = 400 ÷ 365 = 1.0959 years. Your bank may count leap years or leftover days differently, so its figure can differ slightly.

What if I take the interest out every month or quarter?

This calculator assumes interest stays in the deposit and earns further interest until maturity (a reinvestment or cumulative deposit). If you choose an interest payout instead, you receive the interest as it is paid and get back only the deposit amount at maturity.

What happens if I withdraw my FD early?

Banks can charge a penalty for premature withdrawal under their own board-approved policy, and they must tell you about it when you open the deposit. This calculator assumes you keep the deposit until maturity.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes, interest on fixed deposits is taxable, and tax may be deducted at source (TDS). Limits and rates are set by tax law and can change, so check current rules on the Income Tax Department website. The amounts shown here are before any tax.
